We are proud to exhibit a wonderfully accomplished collection of sketches by Suffolk artist Kate Batchelor. Late in 2015 Kate set herself a challenge to produce a sketch a day for a year. Renowned for her artworks depicting the fragile coastal landscape of East Anglia, its wildlife and man’s influence upon it; this collection of sketches brings together her influences in a fantastic narrative of an artist’s journey sketching the picturesque East Anglia.
As Kate said;
‘Whilst drinking a glass of wine and thinking about New Year’s resolutions the idea of doing a sketch a day throughout 2016 came into my mind. I have always loved drawing and at college and University we were encouraged to keep sketchbooks, which are an integral part of an artist’s development – a place where you evolve ideas for your future art practice’.
Kate’s project, which went on to fill some 10 sketchbooks and used 162 pencils, will be exhibited from the 12 August to the 3 September 2017. The show will take place across two spaces; the Annex Gallery at Riverside Art & Glass, and a brand new Lower Ground Gallery at Gallery in the Lanes in Norwich. Both galleries are thrilled to be exhibiting this staggering body of work.
As Louisa Milsome, Gallery Manager, says;
‘Seeing an artist sketch unlocks the mysterious process of how an artwork is created. By having access to the sketchbook, we look at the world through the artist’s eyes and see that not only is sketching an integral part of the creative process, but the sketch itself is an artwork in its own right.’
Kate describes that her project was not without its challenges as ‘it was quite hard initially to keep up the sketchbook as my normal working life as an artist was continuing as usual. The cold days when you could hardly hold a pencil or windy days when your sketchbook was blown around or you just couldn’t stand up were certainly challenging’. However, Kate set herself a rhythm and it became a normal but somewhat challenging part of her daily life. A third of the way through Mike Liggin’s came and filmed Kate’s project at RSPB Minsmere where Kate volunteers, ‘and then I knew it was very real as it was announced on BBC Look East and I definitely couldn’t stop!’
The gentle way in which Kate notices and sketches her surroundings is an approach worth celebrating, and it isn’t surprising that Kate Batchelor’s mindful approach to her own artwork over the last year has received so much attention. Both Riverside Art & Glass and Gallery in the Lanes are pleased to be able to display Kate’s project and proudly invite you to travel with Kate Batchelor through her year of daily sketching and experience some beautiful local scenes, captured simply with pencil on paper.
We are hosting an eclectic exhibition Celebrating Glass from 14 – 28 June. An exhibition showcasing a collection of exquisite glassworks by the Eastern Region Hub of the Contemporary Glass Society (CGS). Visitors can expect to see a dynamic display of fused and blown glassworks including sculptures, wall art, and vessels.
Riverside Art & Glass is renowned for being a light and airy and the exhibition space is sure to present the extraordinary beauty and diversity of the glassworks to their full extent. The diversity of the show draws attention to the versatility of glass as medium for creative expression. Each of the artists has a polished approach to creating glass work, from intricate to modest. Each piece brings a unique and individual style.
Louisa Milsome, Gallery Manager, says;
‘As the only gallery specialising in contemporary glass in the region, we are thrilled that the Contemporary Glass Society has chosen us to host this tremendous celebration of glass-making. We look forward to welcoming existing glass collectors as well as those who are new to this wonderful medium and encourage all to make the most of this rare opportunity.’
The Contemporary Glass Society represents the work of 900 glassmakers within the national and international community. Their ‘Celebrating Glass’ exhibition will be a celebration of its 20th year and will display artworks from a specially selected group of members.
Hazel Millington one of the exhibiting artists says, ‘glass for me is an addiction and working with it is a privilege. Learning new processes and ways to work in this medium is my passion’.
Celebrating Glass is CGS’s third Eastern Hub show and within it the society wishes to introduce some of its work to new audiences. All the team at Riverside Art and Glass are very much looking forward to this exhibition and we are very excited that that CGS has chosen Wroxham for this years’ show.

Back by popular demand! Gallery in the Lanes and Riverside Art & Glass are pleased to be exhibiting a new selection of work by popular London ceramicist Rowena Brown. Rowena specialises in creating hand- built architectural forms, that are inspired by weather-worn and derelict buildings around the coast. Coloured with slips, part-glazed and then earthen- ware or raku fired they have both a real and implied history acquired as part of their passage through fire and smoke. Sold as individual pieces they are perhaps suggestive of abandoned houses, but when grouped together as part of a set or series, they form their own interchangeable and visually striking community of structures.
Rowena holds a BA in Design from St. Martins School of Art London, an MA in Fine Art from Bretton Hall (University of Leeds) and has exhibited work all over the UK and in the USA. Speaking of her inspiration she says her pieces stem from both media images showing the aftermath of man-made disruption and environmental disaster, and also time spent in coastal areas particularly on Hebridean islands, taking photographs of weather-worn and derelict structures.
Over the years Rowena has developed an approach to decoration and firing that results in multi-layered surfaces. While alluding to environmental damage and abandonment, this also creates a visual interest to draw the onlooker in. Rowena’s work has also been the subject of a short film made by the broadcaster Ian Skelly (vimeo.com/60468487). The film explores Rowena’s work, her inspirations and the techniques she uses to create her sculptural ceramics.
Our sister gallery would like to celebrate its first birthday by offering all customers a glass of free champagne and a chance for discount on Saturday 8th October 2016.
Since opening in October 2015, Gallery in the Lanes has quickly become a favourite for art collectors, browsers, and those wishing to purchase that special gift in the city. Located at 25 Bedford Street, where Hovells traded for many years, the gallery has added vibrancy to this bustling hub of creative independent retailers.
With its knowledgeable and friendly staff, and its collection of work by talented artists, the gallery promises to have something for everyone. Whatever your taste, whatever your budget the gallery can advise on the perfect piece of artwork.
The gallery is proud to represent local and national glassmakers, painters, printmakers, sculptors and ceramicists and operates the ‘Own Art’ scheme, which offers purchasers the opportunity to pay for more valuable pieces in interest free instalments.
Assistant Manager Claire Cansick says, ‘We want to celebrate our birthday by thanking our customers for a most successful year, and this seems like the perfect way to pass on our gratitude!’.
Open every day of the week, and with an online shop at www.galleryinthelanes.co.uk, buying that perfect gift or artwork has never been easier. The gallery looks forward to welcoming people to celebrate their special day, and with free champagne and a ‘Discount Dip’, this birthday is not to be missed.
Riverside Art & Glass and Gallery in the Lanes are pleased to announce that a selection of work by Sally Muir, a remarkable portrait painter of dogs, is now available at both galleries.
Sally specialises in creating distinctive and varied dog portraits, using differing styles and techniques to make each dog unique and bursting with personality. Nowhere can this be seen more than in Sally’s 2014 series of artworks, “A Dog a Day”. This series formed from a year where she challenged herself to create 365 dog portraits – prints and paintings of dogs created by the artist, one a day for a year. These were put on display as a solo exhibition at the Pound Arts Centre in Corsham in the Spring 2015.
As Sally herself says she likes “keep it simple, less is more is what I try and aim for — doing things succinctly”. Her paintings reflect this as each dog takes centre stage in the canvas allowing the viewer to focus fully on them and take in their character.
Sally originally held a career creating a variety of published books. However, she returned to university as a mature student to study Fine Art at the Bath School of Art and Design. Since graduating in 2003 Sally has exhibited across the UK including The Discerning Eye Exhibition, Mall Galleries, London and with The Bath Society of Artists.
Sally is highly regarded for her idiosyncratic portraits. In 2010 she won the Holburne Portrait Prize with a portrait of the comedian Bill Bailey and his cat. Further awards include Bath Society of Artists Portrait Prize 2015, Holburne Museum Portrait Prize 2010, Paintworks Prize Bath 2010, and Discerning Eye 2010. We are delighted to now have a selection of Sally’s work in our collection and encourage people to visit them in our beautiful galleries.
